What Is Gochar in Vedic Astrology?

Gochar, also called Gochara, Graha Gochar, or planetary transit (गोचर),  is all about how the planets are moving around the zodiac at a certain time. These movements are then aligned to your natal chart to make sense of any changing influences.

Your kundli stays fixed at the time of birth, while a transit chart changes as planets move. The combination of the two charts should be considered.

  • Rashi: The zodiac sign a planet is moving through.
  • Lagna: Your birth ascendant, used as a reference for transit houses.
  • Bhava: The house or area that the planet is in.
  • Graha: Planetary influences, like Saturn, Jupiter, or the Moon.

For a detailed explanation of how transits relate to your complete horoscope, a Birth-Chart Reading can provide additional context.

Important Planetary Transits and Their Traditional Meanings

In Vedic astrology, it is believed that the positions of the planets in your Kundli will affect different aspects of your life. Below are four important planetary transits and their influence.

Saturn Transit and Sade Sati

  • Duration: Saturn remains in a zodiac sign for around 2.5 years. So a whole cycle takes place in 29.5 years.
  • Effects: Traditionally associated with discipline, responsibilities, hard work, and delays.
  • Sadhesati: The period of 7.5 years, when Saturn transits through the previous, current, and next sign to your birth moon, is known as Sadhesati.
  • Significance: Sadhesati is believed to teach patience, maturity, and long-term stability.

Jupiter Transit

  • Duration: Jupiter stays in each zodiac sign for around 1 year. Thus, it takes around 12 years to complete one cycle of zodiac signs.
  • Effects: Jupiter signifies knowledge, education, wealth, growth, and opportunities.
  • Career and Relationships: Traditionally, it is considered an important planet for making progress in your career, getting married, and in family-related matters.
  • Significance: A favourable transit of Jupiter is believed to help learning, growth, and positive change.

Rahu Transit

  • Duration: Rahu transits through each zodiac sign for around 18 months. This means that it will take approximately 18.6 years to go round the whole zodiac.
  • Effects: Associated with ambition, sudden changes, unconventional opportunities, and material desires.
  • Career and Decisions: Usually linked with changing priorities, new experiences, and surprises.
  • Significance: This is thought to increase your desire to explore and change but can cause uncertainty.

Ketu Transit

  • Duration: Ketu will stay in each zodiac sign for around 18 months. It will always be opposite Rahu.
  • Effects: Traditionally associated with detachment, spirituality, introspection, and personal transformation.
  • Relationships and Priorities: Can be seen as an opportunity to reflect on what you are attached to, your habits, and your personal goals.
  • Significance: Ketu's transit is thought to encourage reflection and a move towards inner growth.

The influence of these transits is usually understood by relating them to your Moon sign, Lagna, and the Kundli. You can understand your planetary positions using the  Free Kundli Calculator

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What details do I need for a transit chart? Enter your name, date of birth, birth time and birthplace. The calculator compares current planetary positions with your birth chart; it does not offer a custom transit date.
  2. Can I calculate transits without an exact birth time? Use an accurate birth time for a reliable birth-chart comparison. An uncertain birth time can affect your birth Moon sign near a sign boundary and therefore the houses counted from it.
  3. Is Gochar the same as Dasha? No. Gochar looks at the position of the planets transiting on a selected date, whereas Dasha looks at the planetary periods calculated using your birth chart. Both are often used in combination by Vedic astrologers.
  4. Can a transit chart predict exactly what will happen? No. This is simply a tool to show you the position of the planets and how they are traditionally interpreted. You should also consider practical circumstances when making decisions.
  5. Is the Transit Calculator free without registration? Yes. JyotirVastu Academy’s Transit Calculator is designed to provide a free Gochar report without registration. Personal consultations are available separately.
  6. How often do planetary transit positions change? This depends on the planet. The Moon moves into a new sign approximately every 2.5 days; the Sun approximately monthly, and slower-moving planets take much longer. This can be affected by retrograde periods.
