Name Numerology Calculator – Chaldean and Pythagorean Methods
Our name numerology calculator converts the letters in your name into numbers using Chaldean or Pythagorean methods. This name number calculator shows your total and reduced number so you can explore traditional interpretations. Compare the charts, follow a worked example, and learn how different name numbers are understood.
What Do Your Name Numbers Mean?
In name numerology, the Destiny (Expression) number uses all letters to describe life purpose and potential. The Soul Urge (Heart’s Desire) number uses vowels to describe inner motivations. The Personality number uses consonants to describe the impression you make on others. These are traditional interpretations, not scientific assessments.
| Number | Calculated from | What it reveals |
|---|---|---|
| Destiny (Expression) | All letters | Life purpose, strengths, potential |
| Soul Urge (Heart’s Desire) | Vowels only | Inner desires and motivations |
| Personality | Consonants only | Outward impression and behavior |
The calculator above displays your whole-name number, compound total and letter values. The vowel-only and consonant-only calculations below explain additional traditional name numbers.
Chaldean vs Pythagorean Name Numerology Calculator
Choose a method before assigning letter values. The same spelling can produce different totals because the two systems use different charts and reduction conventions.
| Feature | Chaldean | Pythagorean |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Babylon | Greece |
| Number range | 1–8 | 1–9 |
| Master numbers | 11, 22 | 11, 22, 33 |
| Name to use | Commonly used name | Birth name |
| Popular with | Indian and Vedic practitioners | Western numerologists |
Master-number conventions vary. Some Chaldean interpretations discuss 11 and 22 as compound numbers; this calculator displays the Chaldean compound total and reduces it to a single digit. Its Pythagorean calculation retains 11, 22 and 33 when reached during reduction.

Numerology of a Name – How to Calculate It by Hand
Use Priya Mehta as an example. Choose a system, assign each letter its chart value, add the values, then add the digits of the total until you reach the final number. For this example, Y is treated as a consonant. For a whole-name calculation, add both names before reducing.
Destiny Number
- Chaldean: P8 + R2 + I1 + Y1 + A1 = 13, M4 + E5 + H5 + T4 + A1 = 19. Total: 13 + 19 = 32; 3 + 2 = 5.
- Pythagorean: P7 + R9 + I9 + Y7 + A1 = 33, M4 + E5 + H8 + T2 + A1 = 20. Total: 33 + 20 = 53; 5 + 3 = 8.
Soul Urge Number (vowels: I, A, E, A)
- Chaldean: 1 + 1 + 5 + 1 = 8.
- Pythagorean: 9 + 1 + 5 + 1 = 16; 1 + 6 = 7.
Personality Number (consonants: P, R, Y, M, H, T)
- Chaldean: 8 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 24; 2 + 4 = 6.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is chaldean numerology? Chaldean numerology is a traditional name-number system associated with Babylon. It assigns letters values from 1 to 8 and considers both the compound total and its reduced number.
- What is pythagorean numerology? Pythagorean numerology is a traditional system associated with Greece. It assigns the alphabet repeating values from 1 to 9 and commonly recognises master numbers 11, 22 and 33.
- Should I use my full name or nickname? Chaldean practitioners commonly use the name you are known by, while Pythagorean practitioners commonly use your full birth name. Enter the spelling appropriate to your chosen method and keep it consistent when comparing results.
- Which number is best for a name? There is no universally best name number. Each number has different traditional associations, and a number does not determine your character, success or future.
- What if my name adds up to 11, 22 or 33? This calculator retains 11, 22 and 33 in its Pythagorean reduction. In Chaldean mode, it shows the compound total and reduces it to a single digit. Interpretations of compound and master numbers vary by tradition.
- Can changing my name’s spelling change my luck? Changing letters can change the calculated total, but there is no scientific evidence that changing a spelling guarantees luck or success. Treat numerology as a traditional interpretive practice.
