Kundali Matching and Guna Milan for Marriage
Kundali matching compares two birth charts to check traditional marriage compatibility through 36 Guna Milan. Enter both partners’ birth dates, times, and places to begin kundli matching by date of birth. Learn what your score means, how the eight kootas are assessed, and why a single number cannot decide whether two people are right for each other.
What Is Kundli Matching?
Kundli matching is a traditional Vedic astrology practice in which astrologers compare two people's birth charts before marriage. Also known as kundli milan, gun milan, kundali matching, or patrika matching, depending on the family and region.
The underlying question is based on the compatibility, according to Vedic astrology, of the couple's birth-chart patterns. The most common way of doing this, known as Ashtakoota Guna Milan, compares eight factors, mostly related to the Moon sign and the birth Nakshatra. Taken together, these eight factors give a score out of 36.
Some families choose to use the kundali matching for marriage as a way of exploring traditional views of compatibility, and may also consult an astrologer to look at planetary influences, marriage houses, and doshas prior to interpreting the result.
It is necessary to provide the date, time, and place of birth for both people in order to perform a complete analysis. Should you wish to review the factors involved in an individual's chart before completing a match, you can generate a free Kundli.
Kundli matching is a cultural and astrological practice, rather than a scientific one, and while it may form part of a family's decision-making process, it should not be used as a substitute for discussion and mutual understanding between the couple.
How to Use the Kundli Matching Calculator
- Enter the groom's date of birth: Select the day, month, and year of birth.

Tip: Date-of-birth-only matching may provide limited results. Accurate birth time and place are generally needed for a complete Kundli compatibility analysis.
The Eight Kootas of Ashtakoota Guna Milan
When people talk about getting “26 out of 36 gunas,” they are usually referring to Ashtakoota Guna Milan. Ashta means eight, and each koota is a factor used in traditional marriage matching. The eight factors draw mainly on the partners' birth Nakshatras and Moon signs. Their maximum points add up to 36.
Two couples can receive the same total through quite different combinations of koota scores. Look at how the points are distributed, not just the final total.
Varna compares the partners’ traditional Moon sign classifications to assess compatibility in outlook and temperament. A low score suggests differences in this regard.
Vashya measures the mutual attraction and influence between the partners on the basis of their Moon signs. A low score traditionally suggests differences in terms of understanding or decision-making.
Tara compares the partners’ birth Nakshatras in order to assess harmony and wellbeing. A low score indicates an unfavourable birth-star combination in the Vedic astrology tradition.
Yoni evaluates the partners’ physical attraction, intimacy, and compatibility by means of animal symbols that have been assigned to the Nakshatras. A low score traditionally suggests differences in terms of instinctive compatibility.
Graha Maitri checks the relationship between the ruling planets of both partners’ Moon signs. A low score may suggest differences in terms of communication and mental compatibility.
Gana compares the temperament of the partners on the basis of three Nakshatra groups: Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa. A low score traditionally indicates differences in personality or behaviour.
Bhakoot examines the relationship between the partners’ Moon signs to assess emotional and family-life compatibility. A low score may indicate Bhakoot Dosha.
Nadi compares the partners’ birth Nakshatras on the basis of three groups: Adi, Madhya, and Antya. Matching Nadi groups traditionally results in Nadi Dosha and a score of zero.
Remember: Guna Milan offers a traditional compatibility assessment, not a guarantee of a successful or unsuccessful marriage.
Understanding Your Guna Milan Score
In the Ashtakoota system, 18 out of 36 gunas is traditionally seen as the lowest passing grade for kundli compatibility for marriage, and higher totals are generally viewed more positively, but these bands are only a starting point.
If a couple has 27 points, this is positive on paper, but the number alone does not reveal whether they have any of the kootas in common or if any particular dosha was noted in their case. On the flip side, if a couple has 17 points, this alone says little about their ability to communicate, compromise, and support each other.
A score is only a summary. In a complete traditional analysis, an astrologer would also consider Dasha periods and the placement of the seventh house and other houses, the strength of Venus and Jupiter in the charts, and the Navamsa (D9) chart. Different practitioners will have different priorities.
Should you have further questions, a Jyotisha consultation can help you learn more about the traditional considerations without diminishing the relationship to a single score. For example, simply knowing whether the negative points were in Tara or Nadi can be more enlightening than being told that a couple has 21 points in common. Ultimately, the decision to marry is up to the couple themselves.
Doshas in Marriage Matching
A dosha is a planetary pattern that some Vedic astrology traditions consider challenging. In marriage matching, certain doshas receive particular attention because they are believed to affect compatibility. But finding one in a chart does not automatically mean a relationship is unsuitable. Astrologers may also check parihara, or cancellation and mitigating conditions, before offering an interpretation.
A Dosha Calculator can help identify these traditional combinations. Four are especially relevant to matchmaking.
Manglik Dosha
Manglik dosha, or Kuja dosha, is a type of dosha formed when the planet Mars falls in certain houses in a person's birth chart. The effect of this dosha is usually canceled when two manglik individuals tie the knot or according to some conditions set by astrologers.
You can also explore the Manglik Dosha Calculator to check your Manglik status.
Nadi Dosha
This is a type of dosha that is formed when a couple belongs to the same Nadi. In Guna Milan, there are a total of 8 points, and when a couple has Nadi dosha, they end up scoring zero (0) in the Nadi category. This dosha is more related to health and family matters, and its effect is easily overridden by other factors.
Bhakoot Dosha
Bhakoot Dosha is brought about by certain constellation signs among couples. In Guna Milan, there is a total of 7 points allocated to Bhakoot, with the affected couples scoring zero (0). This dosha is related to emotional problems and compatibility.
Gana Dosha
This dosha results when a couple belongs to different Gana, i.e., Deva, Manushya, and Rakshasa. In Guna Milan, there are a total of 3 points allocated to Gana, and the affected couples end up with a score of either one (1) or two (2). Although this dosha is associated with personality clashes, other factors in the horoscope should be considered before making any conclusions.
Always remember that doshas are not an indication of a failed or unsuccessful marriage because they can be overridden by other factors present in the birth chart.

North Indian and South Indian Matching
Not every family approaches patrika matching in the same way. North Indian traditions commonly use Ashtakoota Guna Milan, while many South Indian traditions use 10 Porutham (also called Dasa Porutham). Both compare birth-star and Moon-sign factors, but their methods and priorities are not identical.
The ten Poruthams are commonly described as follows:
- Dina: Harmony and traditional associations of well-being birth-stars
- Gana: Temperament category compatibility
- Mahendra: Traditionally associated with growth and family continuity
- Stree Deergha: A birth-star distance factor interpreted for marital well-being.
- Yoni: Symbolic physical and instinctive compatibility
- Rasi: Relationship between the partners' Moon signs
- Rasi Adhipathi: Relationship between the rulers of those signs
- Vasya: Mutual attraction
- Rajju: Traditionally associated with marital stability and longevity.
- Vedha: Birth star pairings traditionally seen as obstructive.
The Rajju and Vedha reports get special attention in some communities, whereas others bring in additional factors or checks for family traditions. South Indian matching is not just the same 36-point calculation dressed up in different names
If you have conflicting reports, first establish which system was used. There may be a difference in methodology rather than an error. Whichever system your family uses, request a breakdown of factors rather than comparisons between reports using differing calculations.
What a Kundli Matching Score Cannot Tell You
A Kundli matching score can be a significant part of the traditions of a family, but it has certain limits. It cannot provide information about the safety, kindness, and honesty of a relationship.
This score also fails to explain whether couples share the same attitude toward children, the household, the division of duties, etc. It does not take into account the quality of relationships and their communication skills. Moreover, the compatibility score is not related to their ability to find a common language and develop relationships. The compatibility of partners, their ages, education, professional plans, interests, and religion, as well as the condition of their health and state of affairs in their families, is of great importance. For example, a couple may have a high score on Guna and have completely different opinions on the need to relocate for work. On the other hand, two people with an average score might have a calm and well-developed plan for their joint life.
Healthy relationships should be supported in every way. However, it should be borne in mind that categories from astrology are not used in medicine for genetic, infertility, pregnancy, health, and mental state examinations and treatment. Marrying without consent and against the will of either side is not allowed.
The most crucial point is that marriage requires the full and conscious consent of both parties. If astrology is essential for you, use the knowledge of kundli matching scores to ask yourself additional questions and control your family’s beliefs instead of letting them control you. It could help you in many situations, including discrimination against other groups and protection from parents who do not want to accept their daughter/son’s choice.
Common Situations in Kundli Matching
Not every relationship follows the same path, and not every couple has complete birth information. These situations are common; they do not make your questions any less valid.
Love Marriage
Couples who opt for love marriages can certainly decide to get their kundli matched, for themselves or for their families. Nothing in the procedure is different merely because the union has been chosen by the couple themselves as opposed to being arranged. However, both people already know more about each other's mannerisms and lifestyles than what the chart can say. Discuss the result, but don't let it come between the bond you've formed.
Second Marriage
Traditional kundli matching can also be done for the second marriage, where one or both people may have been married before. Astrologers sometimes go beyond the basic Ashtakoota scoring system to study the relevant house, the Navamsa chart, and the Dashas applicable. Just as with the first marriage, there is no divine reason why the new spouse should not be as compatible as the first one. In fact, it is even more vital to have an open conversation about finances, children, any differences between the partners, and even how you will act in front of your in-laws.
Same Rashi or Nakshatra
The fact that both partners have the same Rashi (lunar zodiac sign) or Nakshatra (birth star) does not mean they are incompatible for marriage. It might influence some calculations of Ashtakoota, particularly the Nadi, according to different schools of astrology. The specific Nakshatra in which one is born, its pada (subdivision), and any exceptions to the general rules can also be discussed by an astrologer. Don't let superstitions about "same Rashi" or "same Nakshatra" harm your relationship.
Unknown Birth Time
Kundli matching without the exact time of birth is possible but may lack precision. The time of birth determines the Lagna and the position of planets in the chart. Furthermore, it is also vital in many cases to decide the Nakshatra according to which the Guna Milan is done. Thus, an exact time is necessary for Kundli matching.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a good Guna Milan score for marriage? Traditionally, 18 out of 36 gunas is considered to be the lowest desirable score in an Ashtakoota matching system. A higher score than this is generally seen to be better, but the individual kootas along with the birth charts are also taken into consideration by astrologers.
- Is 18 out of 36 Gunas enough for marriage? An 18 out of 36 score would conventionally be seen as scraping the minimum standard for marriage compatibility, but it is by no means an exemplary score. This score should not be seen as a definitive indicator of the marriage's outcome, as multiple factors outside of the charts should also be considered when determining if two people are right for each other.
- Is Kundli matching necessary for a love marriage? No, Kundli matching is not necessary or even a fundamental requirement for a love marriage. It is a system created by astrology, and as such, it is not a scientific or unquestionable truth. Many who practise it still willingly ignore it, and it should not be used to prevent two people from being together.
- Can a couple marry if Nadi Dosha is present? Yes, marriage can be performed even when Nadi Dosha is present, as it is merely a term from astrology. Different traditions have different ways of handling it, and it is possible for one to simply ignore or cancel it. A qualified practitioner would be able to give a couple an honest appraisal of the situation without resorting to outright claims.
- Can Kundli matching be done without an exact birth time? Without a known and accurate time of birth, some of one's signs and chart markers may be incorrect, although this mainly applies to one's ascendant and houses. If one's lunar placement was on a sign or Nakshatra border, the matching process's accuracy may also be compromised, so any scores should be used with caution
- How accurate is online Kundli matching? An online tool can apply a chosen Guna Milan calculation consistently when both partners' birth details are correct. Its output depends on the calculation settings, and the resulting score is a traditional astrological assessment—not a scientifically validated prediction of marital success.
