MahaDasha Calculator – Find Your Current Mahadasha and Antardasha
A dasha calculator helps you find your current Mahadasha and Antardasha using your date, time, and place of birth. JyotirVastu Academy’s Vimshottari Dasha calculator is designed to show the planetary period you are in, when it changes, and how the 120-year Dasha cycle is arranged in Vedic astrology.
What Is Vimshottari Dasha in Vedic Astrology?
The Vimshottari Dasha system is a planetary-period system used in Jyotish. This system looks at the 120-year cycle and splits it into 9 grahas: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury.
Depending on your birth Nakshatra (the Moon position at birth), you will have a starting point for your dasha. This can be explored using our Nakshatra Calculator. The number of degrees your Moon is into your nakshatra will determine how much of your first dasha you have left at birth.
Astrologers will often refer to your Mahadasha (Major period) and Antardasha (Sub-period) when discussing traditional timings for your career changes, marriage, moving house, etc. These are just interpretations.
Dasha will look at a period connected to your birth chart. Gochar (Transit) looks at where the planets are currently moving. A Sade Sati is an example of a Saturn Transit based on your Moon sign. This can be found using our Moon Sign Calculator. However, the Sade Sati Calculator focuses specifically on the individual Saturn Transit.

What Are the 9 Mahadashas and Their Durations?
All 9 Mahadashas are calculated sequentially. The total will be 120 years. Depending on the birth Nakshatra, the sequence of Mahadashas will start with the lord of your birth Nakshatra.
| Mahadasha | Duration | Traditional interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 years | Traditionally linked with introspection, detachment, and spiritual questions. It may be read as a period of reassessing old patterns. |
| Venus | 20 years | Associated with relationships, comfort, creativity, and material interests. Its interpretation depends on Venus’s condition in the birth chart. |
| Sun | 6 years | Connected with identity, leadership and authority in traditional readings. Themes of responsibility or recognition may receive attention. |
| Moon | 10 years | Associated with emotions, family and everyday wellbeing. Astrologers also consider the Moon’s house, sign and aspects. |
| Mars | 7 years | Linked with initiative, energy and decisive action. It may highlight ambition, competition or the need to handle conflict. |
| Rahu | 18 years | Traditionally associated with change, ambition and unfamiliar experiences. Its results are interpreted through its placement and connections. |
| Jupiter | 16 years | Connected with learning, guidance, growth and belief systems. Astrologers examine its strength before judging the period. |
| Saturn | 19 years | Associated with duty, discipline, and long-term effort. Delays or steady progress may be discussed according to the complete chart. |
| Mercury | 17 years | Linked with communication, study, business, and adaptability. Its interpretation varies with Mercury’s placement and relationships. |
How to Read Your Mahadasha Calculator Results
Using an astrology mahadasha calculator, you can see several related results. Here's what each column means:
| Result field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Birth Nakshatra | The lunar mansion occupied by the Moon at birth; it sets the starting Dasha lord. |
| Dasha balance at birth | The portion of the first Mahadasha still remaining when you were born. |
| Current Mahadasha | The major planetary period running on the selected date. |
| Current Antardasha | The smaller planetary period within that Mahadasha. |
| Start and end dates | When a major period or sub-period begins and finishes. |
| Upcoming timeline | The next Mahadasha or Antardasha transitions in the calculated sequence. |
A result shows the period schedule, not a personal prediction. For context about how planetary placements relate to the periods, explore a Birth-Chart Reading.
How Accurate Is Your JyotirVastu Dasha Calculator?
To ensure accurate calculation of a Dasha and Mahadasha, the following are important:
- Date and Time of Birth: If the Moon is close to a Navamsa Cusp, then small changes in time will make a difference.
- Place of Birth and Time Zone: Accurate coordinates plus correct time zone settings will allow for an accurate time of birth.
- Sidereal Settings: The different types of Ayanamsas available will change the sidereal longitude of the Moon, so may give a slightly different result for a cusp.
- Calculation Method: Depending on the planetary position data and how Dasha years are converted to dates, you may see different results.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Which Mahadasha is the best and which is the most difficult? There is no single best or worst Mahadasha. It will depend on how strong the period ruler is situated in the chart, what house it is in, and how it interacts with the other planets in the individual's chart.
- What happens when the Mahadasha and Antardasha lords are enemies? This can be interpreted by astrologers in many ways. Planetary friendships will play a role, but also house rulerships, aspects, and the entire chart.
- Does Mahadasha affect marriage and career timing? Vedic astrologers will often use Mahadasha and Antardasha periods to give potential times of marriage, career changes, and other life events. However, other factors in the chart will also be considered along with transits.
- How do I find my current Antardasha? Input your exact birth details into a Vimshottari Dasha calculator and look at what period is shown in the sub-period section of your Mahadasha. It should show you what your Antardasha is and when it started and ends.
- Can two people born on the same date have different Dashas? Yes. If they were born at a different time or in a different location, this can change where the Moon was exactly when they were born. Especially if it was close to a Nakshatra boundary. This can change what their Dasha started on or how much is left in their first period.
- Can I calculate my Mahadasha without an exact birth time? Sometimes you can get an approximate calculation; however, the dates may not be exact. If the Moon changed Nakshatra around the time you were born, this can change what your starting Dasha is.
- Is a dasa calculator different from a dasha calculator? No. Dasa and Dasha are just alternative spellings of the same word in Sanskrit. It is more important to ensure that the calculator is using the Vimshottari method.
