Nakshatra Calculator – Find Your Janma Nakshatra

A Nakshatra calculator finds your Janma Nakshatra (birth star) using your date, time, and place of birth. Your birth star is based on the Moon’s position when you were born. Use this Nakshatra finder to explore your Nakshatra, Pada, Moon sign (Rashi), ruling planet, and other traditional Vedic astrology details.

What Is a Nakshatra in Vedic Astrology?

The Nakshatras are a division of the zodiac into 27 sections used in Vedic astrology. Your Janma Nakshatra, or birth star, is calculated based on the sidereal position of the Moon at the time of your birth. Each section spans 13°20’ and each section is divided into 4 subsections known as Padas.

As there are 30 degrees in a zodiac sign, using the Nakshatra provides a greater level of detail regarding where the Moon was located at the time of birth. This means that two people can have the same Rashi but different birth stars. Nakshatras are used in traditional readings for personality, marriage compatibility, planetary periods, and auspicious times.

How to Find Your Nakshatra by Date of Birth

To find Nakshatra by date of birth, follow these three steps:

  1. Enter your birth details: Add the day, month, year, exact local birth time, and birthplace.
  2. Calculate your birth star: Use the Nakshatra calculator to identify the Moon’s position at birth.
  3. Read your result: Check the Nakshatra name, Pada, and related traditional details, where displayed.

Birth time matters most when the Moon is close to a Nakshatra or Pada boundary. If you do not know it, the result may be uncertain.

What Your Birth Nakshatra Can Tell You

The birth Nakshatra provides additional information about your Moon sign in Vedic astrology. It is generally looked at within the context of your full birth chart.

Each birth star provides different traditional characteristics. These include things like curiosity, stability, and creativity. They do not provide a measurement of your personality.

Each Nakshatra has a planetary ruler and presiding deity within Vedic tradition. For example, Ashwini has Ketu as their planetary ruler and is associated with the Ashwini Kumaras.

Each birth star Pada has traditional syllables that can be used when naming your baby. Families may choose names using these syllables.

The Nakshatras are used during traditional Guna Milan. This looks at the combination of your birth stars. Learn more about the process by looking at Kundli Matching. This cannot be used to determine the quality of a relationship based on the score.

Your birth Nakshatra will help determine the beginning of your Vimshottari Dasha sequence. A Birth-Chart Reading will explain how these planetary periods are traditionally interpreted within your chart.

They are also looked at when choosing traditional dates for events. JyotirVastu Academy can offer you a Wedding Muhuratha consultation to plan your marriage.

How Accurate Is a Nakshatra Calculation?

The Nakshatra will depend on how accurately you calculate the position of the Moon at the moment of birth. This means that you need to be as accurate as you can with:

  • Birth date and time – using an accurate local date and the most accurate time of birth.
  • Birthplace and time zone – including the time zone offset and any changes to the time due to daylight saving that would have been in place at the time.
  • Sidereal zodiac and ayanamsa – depending on which ayanamsa you choose, the results can change slightly if you are on the border of a Nakshatra.
  • Calculation method - Use reliable data about the positions of planets and ensure that you keep all your settings consistent.

If you get a different Nakshatra using two different tools, check your details and settings. Particularly, make sure that you have used the same ayanamsa. If there is only a slight difference in your results, you may get a different Nakshatra if you are on the border.
